Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs
Imagine a no-cost website that offered the best books and resources from libraries around the country. If a new group of non-profit thinkers have their way, this online public library may eventually be available to everyone - no library card required. The group of 42 held their first meeting just a week ago.
According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, organizer Robert Darnton saw the meeting as a success. He explained that the concept of a national online library holds tremendous potential:
"It simply is not true that everything is now on the Internet, but it is true that the digital resources available through the Internet have enormous potential for education and even for self-empowerment of individuals. So I imagine people in remote locations, armed with a computer or perhaps computerless, but with access to a small public library, being able to consult a collection as great as or greater than the 30 million books in the Library of Congress."
A national digital library would be especially helpful for online learners that do not have access to the physical resources of a university library. The idea of a project this large is certainly daunting. But, the rewards would absolutely be worth the investment.
