Career Fairs

Career Fairs are a wonderful way for employers and job seekers to gain exposure. Usually the events target a specific industry or recent graduates. Career Fairs are an opportunity to learn about employment trends, skills needed for various positions, industry and corporate specific data, and guidance for job application. In some situations you may have the chance to interview with a corporate recruiter on the spot.

Here are some tips to maximize your day at a Career Fair:

  1. Clear your schedule for the entire day.
  2. Dress as you would for an interview.
  3. Bring a pen and paper for note taking.
  4. Neatly pack a supply of professionally printed résumés proportionate to the number of employers you hope to meet.
  5. Carry your belongings in a professional business satchel that is polished, well organized and with plenty of room for corporate materials.
  6. Review the Career Fair Web site or newspaper advertisement and plan ahead which participating employers' booths you want to see.
  7. Open your mind to consider employers beyond your current ideas.
  8. Rehearse a 30-second introduction of yourself, your accomplishments and your objectives.
  9. Be considerate of recruiters' time. After asking your questions, make arrangements for future contact.
  10. Thank the recruiters and ask for a business card so you may send a follow-up letter.
  11. Jot down notes after each interview or meeting to avoid confusing your conversations later.
  12. Take time to talk to fellow attendees, if possible. Often peers can offer you valuable insight based on their search and employment experience.
